Students and others.
Whatever happens in the wider banking market there are certain types of customers who should always be offered free banking. First-time customers should certainly expect to be wooed with good terms. Students and graduates, for example, can still expect freebies when they open accounts, though experts say these should always be seen as the icing on the cake not the sole reason for taking out an account.
As ever the fees, charges, overdraft terms and interest rates should be the key features that win a bank your business. Other first-time bank customers should look at fee-free, no-frills basic accounts. Most providers offer basic accounts, though they are rarely promoted so you may have to ask for one specifically. These accounts allow direct debits and standing orders so you can save money on things like utility bills. They offer cash cards, but rarely debit cards or cheque books. With many providers you can also specifically request a fee-free current account with no overdraft facility if you are worried about going into debt.
